Freestanding, 2020.Built using Node.js, OSC, and MadMapper.In collaboration with Sue Roh.In New York City, only five of the 150 statues are of named women, but there are a plethora of unnamed ones including caryatids, stone columns in the shape of women serving as architectural support for buildings. Freestanding is an interactive projection mapping installation displaying footage of various caryatids in windows across Brooklyn. Projections dynamically change as pedestrians walk closer to the projection, erasing the female figure’s surroundings to unveil a freestanding sculpture. Inspired by Wangechi Mutu’s The NewOnes, will free Us, the installation gives the caryatids power and autonomy.
