Reinterpretation: Caryatids
At the prompt to reinterpret an existing artwork, Sue Roh and I decided to focus on Wangechi Mutu’s The NewOnes, will free Us.
“Reimagining...the caryatid, a sculpted figure, almost always female, meant to serve as a means of either structural or metaphorical support”
“I wanted to keep the DNA of the woman in an active pose, but I didn’t want her to carry the weight of something or someone else.”
We went on a journey throughout New York City to spot various caryatids that are built into the exterior of buildings to support the architecture. We created a collection of footage that allowed these monuments and caryatids to find their own grounding and autonomy. Based on user input on the abstract map representing our journey, the corresponding footage is projected onto a window.
