Light Sculpture: Lost Lights

Lost Light is an interactive light installation radiating different colors of light in response to the ambient noise. When nearby sound levels are low, a yellowish light that resembles the glow of fireflies illuminates the piece, creating a peaceful and serene ambience. On the contrary, if the noise gets louder than a certain level, the piece lights up with a gradient of blue and purple, representing neon signs and hectic city life. Lost Lights is a reflection of the environment around us—both the calmness of nature that is getting lost over time and the restlessness of urban spaces that people often get lost in.

Process

Nick Tanic and I worked together to create the piece. With an LED strip inside an egg-like structure, the form is reminiscent of both industrial and organic qualities. The Neopixels are controlled by an Arduino Uno that is connected to an electret microphone to detect surrounding sound input. I was responsible for the Arduino code implementation, soldering the circuits, and assembling the sculpture.
